Time 2 cover - rough draft
I’m still figuring out the patterns but I wanted to show off my little echo effect with my guitar because I like it, so people can hear the kind of sound I’ve been playing around with lately.
This stuff was pasted together pretty sloppily, the next time I upload it I’ll have cleaned it up and I’ll have all the patterns down right—and hopefully much less copy/paste (if at all). The majority of the piece is pretty simple actually, but I just put in some filler stuff for when there’s bass and a main line.
Ewan Dobson wrote Time 2 and he does it with a similar echo effect, but on the acoustic, and it’s a really neat effect, you should go check it out. Hopefully my next upload will actually do it justice.
Saxton’s Six
It’s so great to see so many people enjoying the video ^_^ Lots of work but it turned out great!

So apparently Tumblr and 4shared aren’t playing very nicely with each other right now, I don’t know how long that’s been going on. It means my first post’s links are all screwy and stupid, and that sucks.
However! I decided the best way to fix this would be to remaster those tracks, so I’ll be doing a bit of that over the summer in between other projects. They’re a couple years old now, they used older instruments and have errors that I know need tweaking. And since I really want to get a sort of webcomic-ish thing going based off of The Sirens by sometime next year, I should be doing that anyway since all those tracks would be featured within it at some point. As it stands, the only real hurdle is art—I’m not an artist much but if I can either find a way to make something look decent or buddy up with an artist for the project, then I’ll definitely move forward with the idea.
This is the download for the next-to-final draft of Saxton’s Six, by (kinda sorta maybe) popular demand. Not much is different from the final edit except a couple gong/trumpet hits that were lined up for freeze frames instead happen on different beats.
Saxxy entry away! The music and video match up so nicely, and everyone that worked on it did fantastic stuff.
If we win something, I’ll make a note of it. It’s entered into six categories.
Saxton’s Six
This has got me pretty excited. I did this for a friend of Reiley’s to win a Saxxy award in the TF2 replay editor update Valve pushed out. He’s still working on the video (and I will be adjusting the audio accordingly to match it) so it’s not yet a finished project, but the moment the video is done and up and winning awards from Valve, I’ll post a link to it here as well. I spectated on some of the video shots last night, it seemed like a neat thing.
But for now, that’s what I have! It’s a unique blend of traditional Japanese instruments and that 70’s action flick style of music, similar to movies like The Street Fighter (not the same as Street Fighter with Ryu and Ken and stuff, but a much older video starring Sonny Chiba). It’s very different from my usual stuff but I’m happy to try new things when people want something different.
So the game devs asked for a video question to their dev diary and I thought I’d do something immensely stupid, hence this.
At least I know now I can make myself sound like a portal turret, more or less! What perfect timing with Portal 2 around the corner…
So I did this for Firefall. I cut out the audio stream’s music as much as I could, and then stuck in my own audio. It means the voice and sfx were a little rough after filtering and such, but at least now I have a video to help me get the timing down, so I can make it high-quality on the workstation computer.
Edit: video’s now the updated version with enhanced audio.
Firefall
Okay, so since I like doing stuff for games, here’s another game thing. Michael Bross is composing the music for Firefall, which is going to be a free-to-play “online team-based action shooter”, and there’s some really neat sounds in the tracks he’s posted.
Problem is, there’s hardly enough stuff to listen to so far. They’re keeping it all under wraps.
So I did this. It has motifs similar to things you’d hear if you go and find any Firefall video on Youtube, especially in the horns. I really wanted to do a sort of echoing string motif where the violas and celli are offset from the violins, because it just seemed more fun and like there was more motion.
This is also the first time (I think) that I’ve used purely digital sounds mixed in with the orchestra, though not very much. Just a little occasional ambience and a synth bass, since there’s a touch of that in Firefall tracks.
We’ll see if I can’t put it in a movie similar as before, there’s a Firefall cinematic trailer that I want to rework into a standard movie trailer, I don’t have the video-editing know-how to do it right so I’ll have to find someone to help me probably.
By the way, is it just me or does everything have that low single-note brass nowadays or what? Inception has something like that, but I feel like I’ve heard it in multiple places now. Anyway I stuck it in because Bross did in his track!
Anyway, enjoy, and Firefall is coming out Q4 2011, for those who want to play; Red 5 is the company producing it, and they have tons of people from well-respected games like WoW and Tribes on the team. Should be good.
laurellaureljayjayjay asked: First off, after listening to everything you've made, I tip my hat to you. Just delightful.
Would you ever want to create music for an animation project? I'm a film/animation student and I'd really love to work with you in the future!
Heck yes :D
I’d really enjoy that.
